Confident-speaking Children Are Better Equipped To Protect Themselves And To Succeed In Life
Leanna Blackmon hopes her voice will mobilize parents, educators and adults alike toward coaching children to become confident speakers thus ensuring a better grasp at success. Ultimately, her charge may also foster protection in the battle against child mistreatment.
In the Fall of 2006, Blackmon, published her e-book 'Ignite Your Child For Success: Develop Vital Speaking Confidence & Enthusiasm for Life.' Her strategy is based upon 10 condensed coaching concepts that help create this confidence, and may even help adults recognize how to move beyond their own fears. She decided to write her book after spending time as an Affiliate with the National Speakers Association Northwest.
“I began to realize the importance of speaking effectively,” said the former educator in a recent interview from her Seattle-area home. “It's key for parents to take time to listen to their children. This is an important part of coaching them since it shows children that parents value their thoughts and feelings; and is essential to developing a strong self-esteem.“
It is her belief that akin to the pursuit of preserving a child's self-esteem is knowing when to urge them to speak up or not, and how to do so. She also believes it can be of benefit for those who may have already undergone a negative public speaking experience.
By melding real-life experiences as a teacher, writer and speaker, Blackmon hopes to integrate a desire to help children at all levels by handing parents, and other adults who have a varied degree of interaction with children, a manual of sorts that can ensure better speaking capabilities.
She also hopes the book will act as a deterrent in the prevention of children becoming victimized,

AAA said it expects about 34.8 million Americans to travel at least 50 miles over the holiday weekend. That?s an extra 500,000 drivers expected on the road between May 24 and May 28, up 1.2 percent over last year.

The airport's $415.5 million worth of bonds were downgraded to "A" from "A+" mostly due to Delta Air Lines Inc.'s service decline at Memphis International Airport. Local passenger traffic is projected to drop below 4 million, which translates into a more than 30 percent enplanement loss from the peak levels in 2008, according to Fitch.

Ritz questions the math on feasibility studies conducted for the various suburbs and says it could be off by as much as $1 million. Southern Educational Strategies, a school consulting firm, conducted all the surveys for six different municipalities around Memphis.

</div>Big Star member, Memphis financial planner Steve Rhea dies<img src='http://assets.bizjournals.com/memphis/blog/morning_call/Morning%20Call%20sun%20Memphis*100.jpg?v=1'>Steve Rhea, a rock 'n roll drummer who went on to a successful career as a Memphis banker and financial planner, died Wednesday, The Commercial Appeal reports. He was 62 and had been diagnosed with cancer last year.
Rhea was a drummer in the legendary Memphis band Big Star, as well as several of the group's precursor bands. He also worked for Ardent Records before leaving the scene in 1970 to pursue a degree at Southern Methodist University. He was replaced in Big Star by drummer Jody Stephens.

whereby her coaching strategies help children to feel confident speaking up where before they might have not. She is aware that if a child is a confident speaker, would-be victimizers will often shy away. “Children need to be in touch with their own thoughts and feelings to the degree that should a situation arise where an adult a child knows and trusts, attempts to harm them, that they can speak up until they are heard,” said Blackmon. “People who intend harm toward a child...look for children who may not appear as confident. If a child has been harmed, resulting in low confidence, there are more obstacles for a child to overcome in the journey for success; but it can be done.” Meredith Larson, Ph.D. Literacy, supports Blackmon's approach, as well as her willingness to point out risks and fears involved in speaking up or out, even for adults. “Leanna's E-book is a wonderful, easy to utilize guide for parents and other adults who interact with children. She clearly provides the background for understanding public speaking, and offers suggestions to help children become proficient, competent public speakers,” said Larson, who practices in Santa Maria, California. Blackmon also realizes the importance of speech in the classroom, and the learning standards and objectives that are part of the curriculum for children at each grade level. She draws from years of teaching at the Kindergarten though university level. She can also speak as a parent, as she herself is a single mother. “As parents are the primary teachers of their children, I felt it was important to help empower them to empower their children,” she said. “Often times, adults themselves fear public speaking and have experienced how it has limited their potential personally or professionally. It is essential for parents to recognize the need to apply these core coaching concepts, in a natural progression, that bridges informal and formal speaking settings. They?re small-business owners, company executives, attorneys, government employees and members of Hawaii?s nonprofit community.

Energy Department to fund wave power test in Hawaii
The U.S. Department of Energy said Friday it would make $500,000 available for a year-long test of a wave energy conversion project at the Navy?s wave energy test site off the Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay.
The funding presents a new opportunity for a wave energy project at the Windward Oahu base, which has been the site of three test projects by Ocean Power Technologies, which recently removed a 40-kilowatt PowerBuoy from the waters off the base.

Erika Lacro has been named chancellor of Honolulu Community College effective July 2.

Hawaii grants EIS exemption for geothermal exploration
The Hawaii Environmental Council made an important decision on Thursday that allows the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to do away with one part of expensive and time-consuming exploration ventures for geothermal projects.

UH study predicts job growth in all four Hawaii counties
Hawaii?s four counties will each see job growth in 2012 as the construction industry finally begins to pick up on the Neighbor Islands, according to a new report by the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization.
The number of payroll jobs rose in Honolulu, Maui and Kauai counties in 2011, but this year the Big Island will also see job growth and all four counties are projected to see jobs increase by more than 2 percent in 2013, UHERO said.

Sentences handed down in Memorial Healthcare bribery case
Four people who were convicted of defrauding the Memorial Healthcare System in a bribery scheme were sentenced to prison by U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra on Friday.
Thomas Kennedy, of Davie, was sentenced to 42 months in prison. Richard Cohen, of Wellington, and Paul Chaiet, a CPA, were each sentenced to 18 months in prison. Golden Sands Canyon Ranch project faces foreclosure

An affiliate of Lehman Brothers wants to seize the site where WSG Development Co. hoped to build the Golden Sands Canyon Ranch hotel in Miami Beach.
Miami Beach-based WSG, led by Eric Sheppard, lost the main Canyon Ranch Hotel & Spa to Lehman Brothers in 2009 in a deed in lieu of foreclosure.

Miami's Camillus House completes first phase of new facility

The Norwegian Cruise Line Campus at 1603 NW Seventh Ave. has finalized construction on three buildings, which will offer long and short-term housing, mental health care services, retail space, a kennel and parking.
Construction has begun on the second phase, which will provide more housing and a chapel.<div class="feedflare">

Costa Concordia wreck removal plan presented
Costa Crociere S.p.A officials and the company tasked with the removal of the wreck of the Costa Concordia from the coast of Giglio Island presented their plan for the work Friday in Rome.
Officials of Costa Cruises, which is owned by Miami-based Carnival Corp. & PLC (NYSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), and the Italo-American consortium Titan-Micoperi, the winner of the contract to perform the work, gave details of the project, along with Costa Concordia Emergency Commissioner Franco Gabrielli.

Florida's jobless rate drops to lowest since early 2009

The April rate was 1.9 percentage points lower than the April 2011 rate of 10.6 percent, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO).
