The 7 C’s Of Coaching

If you want to turn your training and coaching events into memorable, life-changing moments for your trainees, then you need to practise the 7 C’s of Coaching.
1. Climate. Studies show that as many as four-fifths of people lack confidence in their chances of being successful learners. The proportions are even higher for women. If the training climate is additionally hostile, stressful and emphasises passing and failing, then these levels of self-esteem will plummet even further.
A successful training climate needs to be:
relaxed; alert; stress-free; supportive; and safe
taken at a pace just ahead of where the trainees are now
positive in terms of expectations of success
owned by trainees so that they say where they want to go and don't want to go
based on drawing out learning as if it were already there.
2. Communications. Communicating with your trainees is not about lecturing them. It is about making points of contact with them. Here are a few you must master:
Appearance: look the part; dress the part; be immaculately groomed; dress like the best of your trainees.
Body language: your body language is the way you consistently communicate your interest in your trainees. Send them signals that you're at ease.
Words: use words that are short, direct, active and concrete.
Contact: learn their names quickly and use them.
Assertiveness: being assertive means showing you like being who you are and where you are.
Response-ability: take responsibility when trainees make points: listen, understand, respond.
Risks: be prepared to show them that you're a learner too by taking a few risks.
Sense of humour: this is always a point of contact.
3. Care. Jack Canfield carried out a study of "a day in the life" of 100 schoolchildren. He found that for every positive and caring word spoken to the children, 76, there were more than six times as many negative and discouraging ones, 470. Learning is not a comfortable process for any of us: it takes courage by the learners and caring by the learning providers. know how much you care." 4. Child-Like Environments. Until we reach school, our natural curiosity, unbounded enthusiasm and excitement to learn know no bounds. It results in a child of six having what educationalist Bobby de Porter says are: "more bits of learning in place than are needed to gain a medical degree." Sadly, most of this stops when we are exposed to the restrictive approaches to learning of the traditional classroom with its "musts", "don'ts" and "shoulds". To re-discover our natural ability to learn freely, we need to make training environments more like our pre-school world: playful, uninhibited, curious, with no concept of "pass" or "fail", wholly engaged, joyful, fun and low threat. 5. Choreography. Experienced trainers see a training event like a dance. There are slow parts and quick parts; parts for solos, parts for pairs and parts for ensembles. This is known as the choreography of the course or "spatial marking". The choreography of a course is much more than just your body language. It is a subtle way of sending messages to your trainees and signals of how they should respond. 6. Confidence. Nobody ever learnt how to do anything by being shown what they were doing wrong. For people to learn they must be shown the right way and given confidence. If you are aware that you train by saying "that's not right", "don't do this" and "don't do that", take the negatives out and replace them with positive models: "try it this way" or "that's right!" or "Well done!". 7. Congruence. Congruence is the state of being in alignment with what and how you are training. It means that when you state a point of view you also act in accordance with it. trainers who run Assertiveness courses should be confident, act positively and talk with respect trainers who run Time Management courses should start on time, be well-organised and finish on time trainers who run Communication skills courses should know how to get on with people at all levels. This does not mean being perfect supermodels of your subject; rather being prepared to be a learner yourself. Training and coaching is sometimes regarded as a hit-or-miss activity. Facebook shares fall flat on IPO debut

The stock jumped 12 percent in the opening minutes of trading on Friday before slipping back from $43 to close to the $38 price IPO investors paid on Thursday.

Spangler pleads not guilty in $48M fraud case
<img src='http://assets.bizjournals.com/seattle/blog/spanglerindictmentpic*100.jpg?v=1'>Seattle financial adviser Mark Spangler has pleaded not guilty to federal criminal charges accusing him of defrauding investors of nearly $48 million by secretly diverting their money to startup companies he co-founded.
Spangler, the former head of the National Association of Personal Finance Advisors, founded an investment advisory company called The Spangler Group that he ran from his home in Seattle.

Judge: Mastro creditor Hazelrigg must redo bankruptcy papers
U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Timothy Dore ruled against Bellevue businessman Tom Hazelrigg III Friday morning, saying Hazelrigg could not refuse to answer questions about his finances in his involuntary bankruptcy by making a blanket assertion of his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination.
Hazelrigg had turned in largely blank bankruptcy schedules earlier with a notation that he was asserting his Fifth Amendment right.

Motorola will have to modify its Android smartphones or pay Microsoft a licensing fee if it wants to continue selling them in the United States.

Facebook jumps 12% on IPO debut, then slips

The stock (NASDAQ:FB) jumped 12 percent in the opening minutes of trading on Friday before slipping back from $43 to close to the $38 price IPO investors paid on Thursday. It rebounded to more than $41 after that.

Foreclosures fall in Washington state, West
A new report says foreclosures are declining nationally, particularly in the West.
According to RealtyTrac, a California-based foreclosure listing service, foreclosure filings nationwide in April hit their lowest monthly total since July 2007, and foreclosure activity declined sharply in several Western states.
Foreclosure activity nationwide was down 14 percent in April from April of 2011, with one in every 698 U.S. residences having a foreclosure filing during the month.
